Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Moncton conducted a fisheries patrol in support of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) from 5 to 30 October, 2009. The area patrolled was south of the Burin Peninsula, off the southern coast of Newfoundland. Challenging weather conditions kept many fishing vessels from putting out to sea, but the mission still resulted in several hails being conducted and a total of seven vessels boarded, under the authority of the two embarked DFO Officers.

HMCS Moncton is one of Canada’s 12 Kingston class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDV). MCDVs were designed to help the Navy meet new coastal defense mandates in the area of national sovereignty. Although the MCDV’s primary mission is coastal surveillance, the ships perform a wide variety of operational tasks including, but not limited to mine countermeasures; search and rescue; control of shipping; and support to other government departments in the areas of law enforcement, anti-smuggling, resource protection, fisheries, environmental monitoring, disaster relief and scientific research.

Canada Command is responsible for CF routine and contingency operations in Canada and North America. It works in close partnership with federal departments and agencies, as well as with continental, provincial, territorial and non-governmental organizations.
